Rationale and Vision

Our academy  is committed to ensuring all of our students have access to highly impartial careers advice and to a range of employers who can support them in considering their future. To help us do this we align our CEIAG Plan to the Gatsby Benchmarks which have been explicitly referenced throughout the DfE’s Careers Strategy (December 2017) the Statutory Guidance for careers (January 2018) and aligns to the delivery of independent careers guidance to year 8-13 pupils in accordance with section 42A of the Education Act 1997. We also have a Provide Access Policy that focuses specifically on technician qualifications and apprenticeships that is available in our policies section.

The 8 Gatsby benchmarks are outlined below:

1. A stable careers programme

2. Learning from career and labour market information

3. Addressing the needs of each student

4. Linking curriculum learning to careers

5. Encounters with employers and employees

6. Experience of work places

7. Encounters with further and higher education

8. Personal guidance

The vision for the development of CEIAG across our academy is to provide the very best opportunities to enable  our students to make informed and incisive decisions throughout, and beyond, their school life. By using the Gatsby benchmarks as a framework of best practice we have  a CEIAG programme that meets the needs or our ever changing cohort of students, providers and labour market landscape. Our plan promotes equality of opportunity, celebrates diversity and challenges stereotypes whilst inspiring, raising aspirations and giving our students an optimistic outlook on life and their place in the world of work.  We are always  guided by our Co-op values:

Do what matters most

What matters most is ensuring that our students achieve the best possible outcomes.

Be yourself, always

We bring our best self to work, so that we each contribute a bit of our own unique Co-op difference, and respect others for doing the same.

Show you care

We care about our Co-op, our colleagues, our members, our students, their parents and communities, now and for the future.

Succeed together

Co-operating is what makes us different; we’re better and stronger when we work together.

Incorporate Co-op values.

Intent

At Co-op Academy Southfield we value our students and their uniqueness. We will never let anything get in the way of our high aspirations for them. To make sure that they achieve all that they are capable of, we will ensure that our curriculum is literacy rich and is broad and balanced so that the students have exposure to a curriculum that engages and challenges them regardless of their background. Our curriculum will be sequenced so that the students are taught firm foundations and that subsequent learning builds upon what the students already know and can do. We want the students to become responsible citizens who can make positive contributions in adulthood and so we ensure that they are fully equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in modern Britain. We will make sure that they are supported in a range of situations external to the school environment too so that we are contributing to their personal development as well as their academic development. The Co-op Values will be the golden thread running through our endeavours and our approaches.

Our CEIAG programme is both  bespoke  and unique to our academy and is reviewed on an annual basis to meet our students needs based on our monitoring and evaluation processes. Our programme is designed  to entitle all learners to develop their  knowledge, skills, understanding and cultural capital they need to  go on to destinations that meet their aspirations, needs and interests.  Our CEIAG programme prepares students for life beyond Southfield.

Implementation

Our programme is meaningful and appropriate to learners. They engage with CEIAG opportunities through our subject curriculum, SMSC learning, enrichment activities and EHCP targets.

CEIAG is delivered by a wide range of providers such as our internal Careers Advisor, teachers and support staff, FE Colleges (e.g Bradford College) visiting speakers, employers and employees. This delivery includes bespoke workshops, assemblies, work visits, work experience (Takeover Day), careers fairs, enrichment, leadership opportunities and via subject curriculum.

Our students are supported and encouraged to engage with opportunities to support lifelong learning and be prepared for life beyond Southfield, ensuring that they have the very best start in life. Transition is very important to us, and we work closely with Bradford College to ensure that students really experience life beyond Southfield in a meaningful way - with sixth form students engaging in learning on the college campus.

Our parents can access our academy's website which provides clear links to a range of CEIAG related events and information about local market information (LMI) including destinations in Post 16 and Post 19. We work closely with Bradford Local Authority to support all students with EHCP targets and provision, in particular the PfA Team.  Parents  are also encouraged to attend our CEIAG information evenings and parents evenings.

Our curriculum provides lots of opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and skills. Our curriculum allows students to consolidate their learning, applying it in different contexts with different types of scaffolding to ensure that they have the opportunity to retain information.

Learning Outcomes

Whilst these are personalised to the learning journey that our students are on, and influenced by the way they engage and interact with the curriculum, our overall aim from CEIAG is to ensure that students are prepared for life beyond Southfield.

  • Positive destinations data for all
  • Tracking of Compass over time
  • Reduced NEET figures over time  (100% of Year 11 students, Y12 students, Y13 students and Y14 students went to positive destinations)

  • Reduction in behaviour incidents
