Autumn

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

Students now know their strengths and what they are good at and how to achieve their targets. They know that through practice and development of skills in school will support them in later life. They are now ready to learn about the world of work and what skills are needed for the career choices they make.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will learn about the jobs and careers available to them. They will learn about the different roles and the skills needed. They will learn that they should not be limited in their choices of role and not be ‘put off’ by others' thoughts or feelings especially around stereotyping. This will prepare the students to be ready to learn about their rights and responsibilities not just in the workplace but all in all areas of the community.

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

Students now know what jobs and careers available to them and the different roles and the skills needed. They know that they should not be limited in their choices of role and not be ‘put off’ by others' thoughts or feelings especially around stereotyping. This prepares the students to be ready to learn about their rights and  responsibilities not just in the workplace but all in all areas of the community.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will learn about how we are all different but should all be treated with respect. Students will learn what rights and responsibilities they have in and out of school and that the law is there to protect everyone. They will learn about human rights and the impact of discrimination on people's mental well being. This will enable students to be ready to learn that when using the internet, social media and online platforms their rights and responsibilities are the same. They will start to understand that discrimination can still have an impact on mental
well being even when put on an online platform.

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

Students know what rights and responsibilities they have in and out of school and that the law is there to protect everyone. They know about their human rights and the impact of discrimination on people's mental well being. This prior learning has enabled the students to be ready to learn that when using the internet, social media and online platforms their rights and responsibilities are the same. They will start to understand that discrimination can still have an impact on mental well being even when put on an online platform.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will learn that the internet can be both positive and negative and that they need to make their own choice about what they read and see. Students will learn what to and not to share on online platforms and the legal implications of sharing either inappropriate or unconsented images. They will learn that not everything they read and see is factual and that people may try to manipulate them online. This will prepare the students to start to learn about their finances and how not to be manipulated to spend more by what they see in the media.

They will learn about how to budget and what they can afford with the money they have and how to make that money last. They will learn about how they may be encouraged and manipulated to spend money and how not to spend over what they can afford. This knowledge and skills will enable the students to be ready to learn about the financial choices available to them and the risks involved.

This will prepare the students to be ready to learn about gambling and the risks involved in taking chances to make ‘easy money’.

Students will learn what gambling means and why people might do this. They will learn about ‘taking a chance’ and the impact of winning and losing. They will learn how to recognise influences to spend/gamble online and in advertisements and how to manage these without getting into debt. They will learn why and how people can get addicted to gambling and the impact it can have on mental health. This will prepare the students to be ready to learn about the next steps in life and how to finance their adult life.

They will learn about the different support networks and groups available to support them with all aspects of independent living. This will enable students to have the skills and knowledge required to engage with independence in adult life.
